Thank you

As ISTE comes to a close, and I must say goodbye, I want to thank Associated Hebrew Schools and Dr Smiley for allowing me to go on the ISTE adventure. It was an incredible learning journey. Thanks to Kathy Friedman, my principal for encouraging and supporting my ISTE learning and to the Avichai foundation for the meals and Jewish learning part of the conference.

I hope to be able to return to ISTE14… because, as Adam Bellow said, being a life long learner doesn’t mean that you have all the answers…but continuing learning helps figure out some of those… to reach and inspire, ignite and light a fire, to help change the world!

Until next time…..

BLENDED LEARNING

Kristin Kipp – teacher of the year 2011

I spent time this morning listening to an award winning teacher who is a full time online educator.

She spoke about ways to integrate technology on line and create a blended learning model.

Her platform that she uses in the virtual academy is Schoology – a platform I want to explore, considering it is free. I wonder if that is something AHS can jump into.

Blending our content and teaching is something that we are already doing, but this session has opened a window into what we can do…

Grading on line, discussions and assessment are the digital tools she mentioned.

Things to consider are : a learning management system (moodle, canvas, mybig campus, desire to learn)

Things to look for: grading system, discussion boarded announcements, collaborative spaces

Options: Schoology, blackboard, Edmodo

Wikis and blogs are also an important consideration.

Wikis can be used for novel wrap up, toolboxes, projects, discussions,,literature circles, editing groups

Student web folio – powerful work samples on a website

Ideas for projects utilizing digital tools :

Text based, videos, audio, visuals, podcasts such as:

Howstuffworks…podcasts

Grammargirl podcasts

Digital field trip for peers

Scaffolding for teachers – what tools to use? Providing a menu and opening it up for students is important.

EDK ISTE PARTY

So, you can’t be at ISTE and not go to the EDK karaoke party… A gathering of all attendees with drinks, music and fun.

I must say that it was fabulous and another opportunity to mingle, network and relax. Th venue was gorgeous, the company awesome and it would not have been ISTE without it.

SMART VIP EVENT

So, I was lucky enough to get into a SMART VIP event, with all the big CEOs and important people, looking to discuss and share the future of SMART products and get the opinion of leaders in the education world.

It was so secretive, that I had to sign a disclosure agreement, so I won’t be able to blog much about the event. But let me say this: the future is bright. The products, ideas, advancements and direction in which SMART is going into are FABULOUS and EXCITING!

I feel so lucky to be living in this century and be involved in educational technology in such exciting times!
